Cindy Hyde-Smith is a member of the U.S. Senate from Mississippi. She assumed office on April 9, 2018. Her current term ends on January 3, 2027. Senate to represent Mississippi. Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant appointed Hyde-Smith to serve in Sen. Thad Cochran's seat until voters could select a new senator in the November 6, 2018, special election. Cochran announced that he would resign from the Senate on April 1, 2018, due to his health. Smith defeated former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Mike Espy in a special runoff election on November 27, 2018, to complete Cochran's term, which ended in 2021. She was elected to a full term in 2020. Hyde-Smith is the former Republican Mississippi Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce. She was elected in 2011 and took office on January 5, 2012.
