Born and raised in Pocatello, Idaho. He served as a U.S. Army military intelligence officer from 1993 to 1998. He is a past president of the Idaho Trial Lawyers Association and a past member of the Law Advisory Committee for the University of Idaho College of Law. He is a current member of the Advisory Committee for Idaho State University – College of Education.
