Lisa Murkowski is a member of the U.S. Senate from Alaska. She assumed office on December 20, 2002. Her current term ends on January 3, 2029. Senate to represent Alaska. Murkowski's 2010 election marked the first time since 1954 when a U.S. senator was elected as a write-in candidate. She lost the Republican primary to Joe Miller. Prior to her appointment to the Senate, Murkowski served in the Alaska House of Representatives from 1999 to 2002. Murkowski's father, Frank Murkowski, served as U.S. senator from 1981 to 2002 and as the governor of Alaska from 2002 to 2006.
