Ed Byrne served in the U.S. Army, retiring with the rank of colonel. He earned a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Montana, Missoula, a graduate degree in public administration from George Mason University, a graduate degree in science and administration from Central Michigan University, and a graduate degree in strategic studies from the U.S. Army War College.
