Joaquin Arambula was the first Latino physician elected to the California State Assembly. Arambula was born in Delano, California, and grew up in Fresno, California, where he attended public schools. He graduated from Bowdoin College in Maine and the University of Minnesota Medical School. Following graduation, Arambula returned to Fresno to work as a doctor.
