Bernie Sanders was born in 1941 in Brooklyn, New York. He earned a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Chicago in 1964. Sanders worked as a carpenter and a journalist. He previously served as mayor of Burlington as an independent from 1981 to 1989, and as a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1991 to 2007.
