Herman Quirmbach was born in St. Paul, Minnesota. Quirmbach graduated from Central High School in Brookfield, Wisconsin. He earned a B.A. in government from Harvard University and an M.A. and Ph.D. in economics from Princeton University. Quirmbach's career experience includes working as an associate professor of economics with Iowa State University. He has served on the board of directors of the Ames Convention and Visitors Bureau, on the Story County REAP Committee, and as the president and treasurer of the Ames Patriotic Council.
