Wes Moore is the Governor of Maryland. He assumed office on January 18, 2023. His current term ends on January 20, 2027. Moore retired from the U.S. Army in 2014 after 16 years of service. In 2005, he deployed to Afghanistan for eight months, serving as a captain with the 82nd Airborne Division. Moore also worked in the finance sector with Deutsche Bank and Citigroup and as the CEO of the anti-poverty organization the Robin Hood Foundation. He has also published books on race, equity, and opportunity in the U.S. Moore ran for governor of Maryland in 2022 on a joint ticket with lieutenant governor candidate Aruna Miller. Moore won the Democratic primary with 33.8% of the vote in a field of 10 candidates, including former Democratic National Committee chair Tom Perez. Moore won the general election 64.5% to Dan Cox's 32.1%, becoming the first Black governor in Maryland and the third elected in the history of the United States. In the 2022 election in Maryland, Democrats also retained control of both chambers of the General Assembly, becoming a Democratic Trifecta. Moore cited expediting the state's minimum wage increase and making the state's Earned Income Tax Credit permanent as two policy accomplishments in the 2023 legislative session. In 2024, Moore pardoned 175,000 convictions related to the possession of marijuana and marijuana paraphernalia, following the state's 2023 legalization of marijuana.
