Pat Grassley

Representative · District 57
Iowa

Pat Grassley is a member of the Iowa House of Representatives, representing District 57. He assumed office on January 1, 2023. His current term ends on January 1, 2027. The Iowa House of Representatives elected Grassley as Speaker ahead of the 2020 legislative session. He assumed office on the first day of the 2020 legislative session on January 13, 2020. Grassley was born in 1983 in Cedar Falls, Iowa. He earned an associate degree in agribusiness from Hawkeye Community College. His experience includes being a farmer, a member of the Butler County Farm Bureau, and a member of the Oak Hill Cemetery Foundation Board. Grassley is also the grandson of U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley. Grassley was first elected to the House in 2006 when he was 23 years old. During his first two terms in the House, Iowa had a Democratic trifecta. Republicans won control of the House and the governor's office in the 2010 elections, and in 2016, they won a Republican trifecta. In the 2013 and 2015 legislative sessions, Grassley chaired the Agriculture Committee. In the 2017 and 2019 legislative sessions, he chaired the House Appropriations Committee. In February 2025, the Des Moines Register's Stephen Gruber-Miller wrote, "Grassley’s tenure as speaker has spanned the COVID-19 pandemic and bruising legislative battles that revealed deep divides among House Republicans, particularly over education issues such as private school education savings accounts and overhauling Iowa’s Area Education Agencies." In January 2023, the Legislature passed and Gov. Kim Reynolds signed House File 68, establishing the state's educational savings account program. According to the Des Moines Register, similar legislation had failed to pass in the three years before the vote when a group of rural Republicans refused to vote on it. In the 2022 Republican House primaries, four incumbents who had opposed the legislation lost to candidates that Reynolds endorsed.
