Patrick Morrisey is the Governor of West Virginia. He assumed office on January 13, 2025. His current term ends on January 15, 2029. In his campaign for governor, Morrisey ran on his work as attorney general: "I’m the only proven conservative running with a record of taking on the far left, the political elites and anyone else who threatens our way of life. And we win." Morrisey was born in New York and grew up in Edison, New Jersey. Morrisey earned a B.A. in history and political science from Rutgers College and a J.D. from Rutgers Law School-Newark. From 1999 to 2004, Morrisey worked as the staff director and chief healthcare counsel to the House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee. He ran for Congress in 2000 and lost in the Republican primary in New Jersey's 7th Congressional District. Morrisey worked as a lawyer and lobbyist in Washington D.C. from 2004 to 2012. In 2006, he moved to Jefferson County, West Virginia. In 2012, Morrisey ran for Attorney General of West Virginia, defeating five-term incumbent Darrell McGraw 51.2%-48.8% to become the first Republican to hold the office since 1933. Morrisey's margin of victory expanded with each election he won, growing from 2.4% in 2012 to 27.6% in 2020.
